| In the research history of vari-drama, Huadan and Huandan vari-drama, due to the complication of its own meaning, have been the objects widely referred to but lack of special research by the scholars. Regarding to the meaning of Huandan and Huandan vari-dram, various conclusions and points of views occurred frequently. This article, from the collection and sorting of the related word materials about them, has made an analysis of the related record versions, puts forward a doubt on the reliability of the record adopted by most of researchers in the past"Prostitutes, who applied designs and colors on their faces, are Huadan", and concludes that a fundamental hiatus exists in the cosmetics research based on such notion. From identities, themes, drama and features of Chinese national theatre, this article has done a research and explanation to Huadan and Huadan vari-drama and considers that: the latter is a very important genre in the vari-drama performance. Huadan entered the vari-drama field as Yueji in the beginning and became the objects portrayed in many plays along with the development of Yueji. Such abstraction and embodiment enable Huadan to be characterized with features of Chinese national theatre and therefore, their roles on stage, in the interpretation of some works, have broken the limit of Yueji. Besides, this article considers, from the performance angle, that behind the prosperity of vari-drama of the Yuan Dynasty, exists a trigger mechanism or influence on vari-drama's literary creation by Huadan drama. |
