A Comparative Study On Two Translated Versions Of Jane Eyre

In the book Translation, Rewriting, and the Manipulation of Literary Fame, Andre Lefevere claims that"the translator's ideology","the dominant poetics", and translator's patronage are the three factors that"determine the image of a work of literature as projected by a translation".In the eyes of him, Ideology means people's ideas, values system, assumption about the world and the society based on a certain economic infrastructure. The dominant poetics consists of two components:"an inventory of literary devices, genres, motifs, prototypical characters, institutions and symbols"and"a concept of what the role of literature is, or should be, in the social system as a whole"; And Patronage refers to"the powers (person, institutions) which can further or hinder the reading, writing and rewriting of literature"Up to now, Jane Eyre of Charlotte Bronte has been translated by many Chinese authors. Among them, the two versions translated by Li Jiye and Zhu Qingying will be adopted in this study. In this thesis, the author tries to make a comparative study on these two versions with the Target Text-Oriented descriptive approach of the Manipulation School under the framework of Andre Lefevere's theory about ideology and poetics, so as to detect the functions of ideology and poetics on the decision-making process of translation. There are four chapters in this thesis.In the introduction part, the author explains the aim and significance of her study.In the first chapter, the author gives a general introduction on the Target Text-Oriented descriptive approach and Andre Lefevere's theory.The second chapter gives an introduction on the novel Jane Eyre and the two selected versions as well as the reasons on the choice of source novel.In the third chapter, a comparative study will be carried out on language style including the linguistic level and style level. And also explanations from the ideology and poetics points will be given to the differences on these two versions.In the forth chapter, the author studies these two versions on the aspects of translation strategy, and also tries to explain the difference from the point of translation poetics of their times, target readers and Li's patronage.Based on the above analysis, the author gets two conclusions for her study:1. There does exit a correlation between their translation activities and then social background. The relation is reflected in the interplay between translation activities and certain ideologies or poetics.2. For the different translated works of the same source text produced in different age, it is reasonable and necessary to take the historical background into the judgment consideration. As long as the translated version meets the demand of its social background and translation aim, then it is a successful work. A version couldn't meet all ideologies and poetics in different times, so re-translation is necessary.
