| Cultural Turn which started in the field of translation studies in the 1980s has not only extended the scope but also explored the new perspectives of translation studies. Since then, the translation studies has not been confined to the linguistic level. Rather, it has been put in a microscopical context of cultural, society and history. Lefevere, a famous translation theorist, believes that translation is the rewriting of the source text. Translation can't take place in a vacuum. Inevitably it will be constrained by three main factors including ideology, poetics and patronage .Jane Eyre is the masterpiece of Charlotte Bront(e|¨) who is a famous writer in the nineteenth century. Up to now, there were many Chinese versions of Jane Eyre. Among them,the two versions translated by Li Jiye and Huang Yuanshen are well-known. On the basis of Lefevere's rewriting theory, this paper attempts to make a comprehensive comparative study of two Chinese versions of Jane Eyre to show the influence of ideology, dominant poetics, patronage in different historical backgrounds upon the translators'translation principles and strategies, and therefore reach a conclusion that the historical, social and cultural context in which a literary translation takes place is of great importance to its evaluation. A version couldn't conform to all ideologies and poetics in different times, so re-translation is necessary.This paper falls mainly into seven parts. Introduction gives an overview of the research background significance, methodology and structure of the thesis.Chapter One gives a brief literature review of the Chinese version of Jane Eyre and related research on it.Chapter Two serves as the theoretical framework of the whole paper. It introduces Andre Lefevere's rewriting theory and the influence of three manipulation elements, namely ideology, poetics and patronage ,upon the translator and the translation.Chapter Three and Four are in-depth analyses of the influence of ideology and poetics on two translations of Jane Eyre in a comparative manner. Chapter Five introduces briefly the influence of patronage on two translations of Jane Eyre.Chapter Six is the conclusion of this thesis, in which the author summarizes the major findings and puts forwards some suggestion s for the future studies... |
