As the old saying goes: "Among all the good deeds, filial piety comes first" . Filial piety is one of the paramount guiding ethics governing social behavior in Chinese societies. It has been particularly emphasized by Confucian scholars throughout Chinese history as regulating interpersonal, especially intergenerational relationships among Chinese people. The purpose of the present paper is to explore the college students attitude toward filial piety , the connotation of modern filial piety, and the factors that impact filial piety. The study of filial piety in Chinese societies was a discipline dominated by historians, philologists, ethicists and philosophers. To the 1970s, the empirical studies on filial piety began to appear, indicating a new perspective of behavioral science, particularly from that of psychology. So far, the research progress is encouraging, but there are still some drawbacks. For example , the less research on adults and children ,the lack of the study on action toward filial piety .In addition ,the previous studies was mainly on theoretical level ,while neglected the life level of filial piety ,as well as , most of empirical researches were tentative and lack of qualitative research. Another drawback of the current research was that it mainly depended on survey data, the relation between questionnaires may just originate from the similarity of the concept. In view of this , the present study combined quantitative and qualitative measures to explore college students' attitude toward filial piety and the factors that impact it from the psychological perspective.According to the research technique, this study can be divided into two parts.Their purposes and the issues to resolve are different. The first part is a kind of quantitative research, whose purpose is to explore college students attitudes toward traditional filial piety. Data is collected via the FPS administered to a sample of about 600 college students (both undergraduate and graduate students). The questionnaire includes two identical versions, exploring college students' attitude toward traditional filial piety and that of their parents reported by them respectively. The issues to explore are as follows: the relation between several domains of traditional attitude of filial piety, the different views of contemporary college students on various aspects of traditional filial piety, the difference between views of students from different genders, grades, and so on. The study based on traditional filial piety has a significant and important advantage, that is, you can explore both the meaning changed and the meaning which is still remained. However, this research also has a disadvantage, it is difficult to explore the new composition or content of modern filial piety. This is just one aspect to study in the second part. The second part is a kind of qualitative research. The purpose is to resolve the following issues through interviews: the nature or quintessence of filial piety, the value and the suitability of the filial piety in modern society, the connotation of modern filial piety, and the factors that impact attitude toward filial piety. The main findings from the present study are as follows:1.Most college students think that it is still necessary to advocate filial piety in modern society.2.The reason for filial piety of college students is that, they love their parents. It is a deep, tender, ineffable feeling of affection and solicitude toward their parents, which goes beyond both redounding upon their parents and rendering back.3.Except the aspect of ensuring the continuity of the family line and bring honor to the family name, there is significant correlation between college students' attitude toward the other five domains of filial piety. College students hold stronger agreement in serving and supporting parents and reverence and mourning parents. They hold lighter agreement in oppressing themselves and showing obedience to parents and ensuring the continuity of the family line and bring honor to the family name. 4.The college students' attitude toward filial piety is autonomic, reciprocal and timely. Their filial piety behave both materially and mentally.5.For college students'attitude toward filial piety , the impact is little of Genders, whether singleton and whether from city, town or country. on the contrary, other factors ,such as, grade, speciality, whether married or not, and parenthood, impact their attitude toward filial piety more.6.The case study agreed with the whole study. It is appropriate.
