In recent years, the situation of adolescents'mental health has been widely studied. The present study examined the relationship of self, which is the inner cause of mental problem, and adaptation, which is the outer manifestation of mental health. It also tried to explore the relationship between self-cognition, self-evaluation and adaptation of Chinese junior high school students. The study design used in this research was based on quantitative method. The data came from the key project of the Chinese Ministry of Education"The Study of Adolescents'Mental Health Diathesis". First, the questionnaires were revised by using exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. Then, hypotheses basing on literature review were proposed. The current situation of self-cognition, self-evaluation and adaptation, and the important factors influencing them were then analyzed. At last, structural equation modeling was used to set up the structural model of self-cognition, self-evaluation and adaptation. The results indicated that the self-cognition and self-evaluation of junior high school students are neither positive nor negative, and that their level of adaptation is medium. The data fit a normal distribution, and sex, grade, family context and only-child situation were found to be major influencing factors. Results also showed that self-cognition and self-evaluation are positively related to adaptation. Furthermore, it was found that self-evaluation could partially mediate the relationship between self-cognition and adaptation. This study proposed factorial structure of self-cognition, self-evaluation and adaptation, respectively, and it also set up the structural model involving the three variables, enriching the Chinese theoretical research on mental health. In the area of practice, this study offered normal standard for the research of adolescents'self-cognition, self-evaluation and adaptation, and also provided reliable measuring instruments for their evaluation. At last, some advice was given. Mental health education should focus on students in grade three, those who come from the countryside, and those who come from a family with several children. Concerning the students who have adaptation difficulties, enhancing their self-cognition and self-evaluation is more important and effective than resolving their problems only.
