Stefan Zweig, famous novelist and biographer, together with Chekhov, Mauriac, is known as one of the three 20th century European novelette and short story writers. His stories"reproduce dramatis personae and their life experiences". The psychological descriptions in his writings are vivid and exquisite. By dint of Freud's doctrine and the discourse of stream-of-consciousness, this article intends to reach a better understanding of the psychological descriptions in Stefan Zweig's novels .This paper consists of three parts: preface, main text and epilogue.The preface sums up Stefan Zweig works and current studies on his writings, defining the aim and method of research in this thesis and bringing forward the focus of study.The body of this thesis is made up of three chapters. The first chapter analyzes the psychological description in Stefan Zweig's novels and summarizes its features. Zweig made use of Freud's theory to portrait the journey of the heart, set up fascinating suspensions. The author employed reflection, inner confide, free association, rendition of dreams, scenic backdrops and depiction of actions to show the innermost being of characters.The second chapter analyzes the psychological descriptions in Stendhal's rouge et noir, Dostoevsky's crime and punishment." and Tolstoy's " Anna Karenina". It highlights the emotional strength, the profoundness of love and lust and the unique feature of psychological stages.The first section of the third chapter analyzes the method of psychological depiction: interior monologue, free association, depiction of dreams, sense perception. The second section compares Zweig's psychological description with that of stream of consciousness, pointing out special characteristics such as the logic, sociality and its refined depiction of human instinct. The ending summarizes the whole article, stressing the uniqueness of Zweig's psychological description and its contribution. |
