Textual Cohesion And Translation

Every language has its own unique way of cohesion. The natural translated text requires the translator's good command of the different cohesive devices between two languages and flexible transfer in their translation. Although they enjoy some similarities in their usage, these do not exclude discrepancies which deserve our great attention.This dissertation bases on the main fruits in textual cohesion of the scholars home and abroad and adopts the classification of cohesive ties in broad sense. Thus, the present paper divides the main cohesive ways to non-structural cohesion and structural cohesion, which in turns are classified into grammatical cohesion, collocation and information structure, theme-rheme structure, parallel structure respectively. For grammatical cohesion, one type of non-structural cohesion, which includes reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction, we combine its contrastive study and the traditional way of classifying the sentence constituents and then summarize six main techniques to cast some light on translation, particularly at the sentence level. Collocation, another subcategory of non-structural cohesion, plays an important role in figuring out and pinpointing the exact meaning of words in the particular context and in helping us to choosing the most suitable way of expression. Structural cohesion includes information structure, theme-rheme structure and parallel structure; this type of cohesive tie contributes a lot for arranging the sentence and phrase in their suitable order.In summary, this dissertation is trying to offer some generally applicable techniques and transferring laws of cohesion in E-C translation by using the theories of contrastive study of E-C cohesive ties and meanwhile considering the unique character of Chinese text-being loose in form yet closely-knitted in contents.
