| Female culture functions as an indispensable subcategory in the mainstream culture, which is mostly demonstrated by women's literature that is based on the unique experience of women and shaped by the gender. Therefore, the significance of women's literature cannot be neglected. Furthermore, the prosperity of feminist theories brought about by western feminist campaign has made women's literature highlighted in people's view. The translation of British and American women's literature has played a positive role and exerted profound influence on China's cultural and social development. Yet, the researches on translated women's literature are quite few. The undeserved sparsity calls for more academic attention. From the perspective of polysystem theory, the thesis gives a descriptive analysis of the history of the translation of British and American women's literature in China after 1919.The translation of British and American women's literature in this thesis is chronologized into three stages. The first stage stretches from 1919, the May 4th movement to 1949, the establishment of the People's Republic of China. The second stage is from 1978 to 2000 and the third covers what is between 2001 and 2007. Based on the polysystem theory, the author strives to analyze the social and cultural background, the prevalent poetics and other dominating factors in the process of translation, then summarize the characteristics and the influences of the translation of women's literature in each stage and, after that, explore the position of translated women's literature in the overall translated literary system.The research of the history and the translation process of British and American women's literature provides a wider scope and more insightful ideas for analyzing and understanding the underlying factors that decide literary translation. It is also a practice and consolidation of polysystem theory under which the whole study in the thesis is conducted.
