Japan is one of the developed countries in Asia and also in the world. Japanese film is a specific branch of world filmdom. For the sake of Japanese history and geography, morbid esthetics becomes a particular character and symbol in Japanese films. In this thesis, the cause of morbid esthetics will be discussed, and several typical proposition of morbid esthetics will be illustrated. During the comparison of films with the same subject, we will find out that Japanese culture is quite different from western culture, which causes the difference between Japanese films and western films. Furthermore, the morbid esthetics also reflects the weakness in Japanese society. The conclusion of this thesis is that a higher achievement will be reached by Japanese film if only Japanese directors change their old philosophy towards film producing.
