On Translating Literary Style Of Pride And Prejudice Into Chinese

Style is always a topic of dispute in the field of translation. The definition of style is vague and abstract before linguistics is introduced into literature. Studies on style translation are far from being systematic and scientific. The primary problem arising in the translation of fiction is called"deceptive equivalence". In the translation, almost the same referential meanings of the original are transmitted while literary significance or aesthetic effects carried by some particular stylistic devices are abandoned.To handle the problem in a scientific way, the thesis is adopting literary stylistic approach to discuss style translation based on Shen Dan's definition of style as artistically or thematically motivated linguistic choices. Literary stylistics describes the linguistic forms and at the same time digs out the thematic or aesthetic meanings of the literary text. It focuses on the relationship between linguistic forms and thematic or aesthetic meanings, thus helping to maintain the original stylistic values in translation. Literary stylistics can be used as a touchstone of judging literary translation.The thesis, guided by the stylistic theories of Leech and Short, analyzes the style translation of Sun Zhili's Chinese version from lexical level, syntactic level, rhetorical level, and the level of cohesion. It is through the analysis of linguistic forms with stylistic values in the novel that we find the beauty and charm of the Chinese translation the same as original. Only with a major consideration of literary stylistics can translators achieve the unity of form and content. There needs to be more qualitative analysis and theoretical guidance on how to detect linguistic forms with stylistic values accurately and objectively.
