The current situation of the oral English teaching is far beyond our expectation in China. It has long been the case that many college students are rather poor in oral communication. Therefore, the purpose of this research paper is to put forward a comprehensive approach to oral English teaching in China so as to improve college students'oral communicative competence effectively.The present study was conducted in Hubei University of Technology. Forty college non-English seniors participated in the study,of which 20 students in the experimental group and 20 students in the control group. The experimental group is instructed with the comprehensive oral English teaching approach, while the control group taught with the traditional teaching method. Both pre- and post- oral tests are conducted in the two groups. Besides, a questionnaire and a classroom observation are also involved in this study.The study presents the following implications for oral English teaching: using a balanced activities approach; putting communicative factors into traditional oral English teaching; arousing every student's passion for learning. The major conclusions are:1) The comprehensive oral English teaching approach improves students'oral competence effectively.2) This new comprehensive oral English teaching approach improves students'various learning abilities.3) The comprehensive oral English teaching approach increases students'interests in oral English learning and also can satisfy their expectations.4) The comprehensive approach can stimulate the students to actively participate in the oral communication. The active participation promotes students'active learning.In summary, the comprehensive approach to oral English teaching has a high pedagogical value and can successfully meet the criterion of maximum efficiency.
