On English-Chinese News Translation

The thesis mainly elaborates on English-Chinese (E-C) news translation, which plays an important role in delivering information. Transediting should be considered as indispensable in doing news translation. Meanwhile, as a special translational activity, transediting has been studied by various researchers and significant insights have been gained through different approaches. This thesis attempts to prove why adaptation in news translation is necessary and how it should be done. The thesis is also intended to supply appropriate methods for adapting practices. Only English-Chinese news translation will be touched upon.Drawing on previous research findings of other scholars, this paper bears its own individuality in the self-collected corpus of sample news from the Associated Press and Reuters. Quantitative analysis is conducted to illustrate relevant conclusions in this paper.This thesis adopts comparative analytical method with functionalism as theoretical basis. An analysis of news helps to identify the exclusive nature of news translation. Through comparison between translation brief and source text-in-situation, it is intended to justify adaptation in news translation and to propose five methods in doing transediting practice.
