The German functionalist approach, especially the Function plus Loyalty model proposed by Christine Nord has provided a new insight for translation studies.Even though there are many studies in news translation from the perspective of functionalism, the facts remain that few is about the translation process and potential problems the translator might encounter in the news translation process.A quick search of CNKI's database reveals that most previous master's dissertations on the functionalist approaches still takes the traditional linguistic-bases approach as her theory basis when it comes to case study. This thesis intends to analyze the process of the political news translation using the text analysis model presented by Christiane Nord. This thesis is divided into four parts. The first chapter outlines a brief historical view of the German functionalism, where the origin and development will be illustrated. We will look at four representatives of German functionalism and their major contributions,i.e.Katharina Reiss and her Text Typology,Hans.J.Vermeer and his Skopos Theory,Justa.Holz-Manttari and her Translation Action.Subsequently,we will illustrate Christiane Nord and her Function plus Loyalty in detail, where Nord points out three particularly useful aspects in translator training. In the second chapter,we construct a framework of translating under the German functionalism, especially the Function plus Loyalty model. We will first look at the features of the news translation and translation strategies and translation techniques adopted accordingly.Since functionalism sees translation as an action,a dynamic process where different agents play different roles, and we shall look at each role's impact on the translation. In the third chapter,we will explain the translation is a top-down process in detail, where three kinds of translation problems in news translation identified by Christine Nord-pragmatic problem, cultural problem and linguistic problem-will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. The pragmatic problem will be looked at from the perspective of ideological aspect, the cultural problems will be analyzed in terms of the headline and lead, and the linguistic problems will be illustrated at lexical and syntactical levels. The last chapter strengthens the conclusion that under German functionalism, the translating is a dynamic process. The purpose of translation should be identified first and under its guidance, the translator should choose the proper translation strategies. But in the meantime, the translator has much freedom in the choice of the translation strategies and techniques.
