Though the research of integrity has a long history both in eastern and western cultures, but it is much different as to the specific understanding of integrity concept, thereby influence the performance of people with different cultural background.China's traditional concept of integrity roots in the natural economy, and is influenced by the feudal patriarchal hierarchy and the Confucian thinking of moral governing. With a main character of identity relationship, it is built on the virtue of integrity, relies on personal nature of mind, and shows one's own moral conduct, ethical character, self-cultivation and sentiment. Comparatively, the western concept of integrity roots in the commodity economy, and is influenced by the philosophical ideas of individual equality and protestant ethics. With a main character of equality relationship, it is built on contractual integrity, relies on external constraints, and shows mainly one's reliability of honoring a commitment for the pursuit of personal interest. It is undeniable that the traditional Chinese concept of integrity as an important moral resources still has an important influence in the contemporary era, but the modern society demands integrity that expresses not only the moral requirement of human being, but also the mechanism that coordinates the various social relationships of interest. It must have both intrinsic value of virtue and guarantee the interests orderly as well. Therefore, the modern concept of integrity we will build is not a simple reversion of the traditional Chinese concept, but the organic structural transformation of the valuable moral factors. At the same time, we should learn from the characteristics of the market rule of law, promote the freedom, equality, rights-based contractual integrity in the western concept of credit as a main element of the modern concept of integrity, and eventually brings about the integration of the virtue of Chinese moral integrity and the system of the western contractual integrity. |
