Effective Translation Of Typical Chinese Expressions

Since language is closely related to culture, English as a lingua franca has been pluralized, with various varieties such as American English, Indian English, Singaporean English and China English. According to Kachru's Concept on Three Concentric Circles, those varieties in outer and expanding circles are expanding rapidly, especially in the post-colonial period. Communicability has been the standard to judge the acceptability of world Englishes.The Chinese Varieties of English (CVE) have been developed into a dynamic continuum with three layers: the educated China English at top, China English in the middle, and Chinglish at bottom. China English, with a history of over 20 years, has been accepted as one variety of world Englishes. Along with China's rising status in the world, China needs to communicate more with the outside world by expressing itself and presenting its unique culture.On the basis of Kachru's Concept on Three Concentric Circles, the characteristics and functions of CVE are analyzed in this paper, and the two components of the CVE continuum—Chinese English (Chinglish) and China English—are specified and analyzed. Specific to the translation of typical Chinese expressions, the unique roles played by China English as a hybrid of Chinese and English cultures in translating these expressions are highlighted. Given the differences between Chinese and English, it is proposed in this paper that the couplet of China English and explanation should be used to break the barriers in understanding.
