With continuous globalization and localization of English, English language hasbeen upgraded to the plural form of “World Englishes†from the initial singular formof “Standard Englishâ€. Different language convention and cultural tradition aretransplanted to all kinds of English varieties, and China English is just one of theworld Englishes which conveys particular Chinese culture. The concept of ChinaEnglish was first put forward by Ge Chuangui in the field of translation which wasmeant to express particular Chinese social and cultural phenomena. China Englishtakes Standard English as the core and meanwhile it conveys specific Chinese socialculture, so it is regarded as the inevitable combination of Standard English grammarrules and Chinese culture. China English is an intelligible and acceptable Englishvariety to distinguish from Chinese English. China English is an embodiment of theinclusiveness and creativity of English. The purpose of the study was mainly reflected in two aspects: theoretically, thestudy probed into the inherent deep reason of the existence of China English and itsrationality within the frame work of linguistics and cross-cultural communicationrespectively. The author justified that the existence of China English was inaccordance with relevant English variety theory of Three Concentric Circles and thatChina English was beneficial to show our Chinese cultural identity. Four languagefeatures were further discussed from four perspectives of phonology, lexis, syntax anddiscourse, which fully demonstrated the intelligibility and acceptability of ChinaEnglish. In the practical aspect, the study kept a close combination of Englishteaching and learning by making a thorough investigation among100English majors. With the assistance of SPSS19.0, the investigation concluded that:(1) as for theEnglish majors, the demand for daily English communication and their interest inculture were two important motivations for them to learn English.(2) The input ofChinese culture and China English was insufficient in current English teaching, andthe teaching materials and teaching methods in use today failed to keep up withChinese social and cultural development.(3) As English majors, they tended to take a more tolerant attitude towards China English variety. However, a comprehensiveunderstanding and grasp of relevant China English knowledge were necessary forthem.(4) Their ability to apply China English to express particular Chinese socialculture needed improving. On the basis of the above analysis, the author points out that: on the one hand, consideration should be given to the dual cultural input of both target language andnative language in the process of ELT for English majors. China English ought to beadvocated for its adaptation to Chinese culture and creativity. Educators are supposedto keep the “intimacy degree†between language input contents and the learners inorder to reduce their language learning anxiety effectively and satisfy their demand ofoutputting English conveying particular Chinese culture. On the other hand, educatorsshould adjust the teaching method and evaluation system constantly. The traditionalStandard English is no longer the only evaluation criterion to weigh English learning. The practical ability to apply China English should be considered comprehensively, and in turn the modification will definitely promote their translation andcommunication skills. Great importance should be attached to the cultivation oflanguage creativity in the process of ELT.The thesis includes five chapters: the first chapter is literature review of WorldEnglishes and China English. The second chapter is the theoretical basis of this studyby applying relevant linguistic theories and inter-cultural theories, both of whichconfirm the rationality and necessity of China English. The third chapter focuses onthe linguistic characteristics of China English and demonstrates its acceptability. Thefourth chapter presents the investigation and data analysis of China English. In thefifth chapter, the author proposes theoretical and practical implications for Englishmajors. |
