In the Wuling Range of Hunan, Hubei, Chongqing, and Guizhou provinces dwell the Tujia people, who are recorded to have a 3000-year history in weaving. Tujia brocade is the most complete form of an ancient textile craft the Tujias retain. The Tujia people seldom communicate with other ethnic groups due to geographical remoteness and hard natural conditions, so Tujia brocade, closely related to their daily life, mainly reflects the Tujia customs and religions, and with thousand-year development eventually forms its own simple local artistic characteristics . By analyzing the abstract geometric patterns and color art of Tujia brocade, this thesis aims to display its artistic characteristics and explore the profound historical background and humanistic connotation behind it. With the method of non-historical control comparion in cultural anthropology, this thesis also researches into the images of Tujia brocade and those of other ethnic groups' brocades, which reflect the same themes, and comprehensively summarizes the visual features of Tujia brocade. It is hoped that this systematic research into the forming factors and artistic value of Tujia brocade will provide a broader space for its furthur development and survival. |
