XinChao Union was an organization established by Beijing University's students during the May 4th movement, and《The Renaissance》was a periodical published by it. There were three volumes (12 issues) published in all from its beginning on January, 1919 to its ending on March, 1922. XinChao Union had continued to publish《XinChao Series》and《XinChao Literature and Art Series》after《The Renaissance》was stopped.《The Renaissance》is a cultural periodical which can not be ignored in the contemporary history of Chinese literature. It was published by Beijing University's students and full of youthful spirit. However, for a long time, many researchers had taken《The Renaissance》as an accessorial periodical of《New Youth》instead of taking it seriously. From this key point, the writer attempts to research young intellectuals' initial steps and development in May 4th Movement from《The Renaissance》based on the related original information, and makes further analysis on the characteristics of the periodical published by students.The introduction makes brief description of the present studies of《The Renaissance》and XinChao Union, and points out the existing problems in them in order to make the focus of this paper clear. The first chapter mainly introduces the development of《The Renaissance》from start to end. The second chapter mainly analyses the young intellectuals' initial steps and development from five aspects which are the power of the Union, the new-style education's effect, the readers' encourage, the support of Beijing University and the teachers' help. The third chapter makes further analysis on the characteristics of the periodical published by students.
