The Study On The Correlative Questions Of Mental Verb In Mandarin Chinese

Mental verb is one of the most flexible and complicated verb. It arouse the intrest of many grammarians. Their studies involve many areas of grammatical study, such as syntactical meaning, semantic orientation, cognition, valence etc. But it shows various degrees are in the study of different areas. A lot of arguments still exist. In this paper, based on the Chinese language and "Mandarin Chinese Dictionary(fifth edition)"(2005),"The usage of Chinese verb"(1987)","The detailed explanation in grammars of contemporary Chinese"(2003),an exhaustive inspection of mental verbs is given . According the truth , we redefine the mental verb. We hope a deeper research will be done by studying on the semantic types of sentence,category of Realis and Irrealis, Cognition combines with psychology .In the first chapter , past researchers are reviewed to specify the key point of our study. Chapter 2 focuses on the inspection and redefining the mental verb. We also list all the vocabulary. The next three chapters show the key points of this paper.Chapter 3 is dedicated to finding all the mental verbs which can be used in sentence of "ba",and give an abstract of"ba"sentence as"A'ba'B+Vmental verb+C".According the whole types of sentence, we inspect A,B,C. and explain why some mental verbs cannot be used in"ba"sentence of. We make an conclusion that only the ones which has the self-reaction force in emotional verb can be used in"ba"sentence. The rate in cognitive verb is much higher than the one in emotional verb .it is because that the cognitive verb is more dynamic than emotional verb.Chapter 4 focuses on the issue of semantic analysis. It includes the analysis of mental verb and the embodiment of Realis and Irrealis in different kinds of sentence and inferior classification of mental verb. We find some kinds of mental verbs which have the function to make the event irrealis according three parameters give by Chun.Timeberlake in 1985. In this chapter ,we also discuss "kan2,pa,yi wei""and take them for examples ,as they also have the function to make the event irrealis.Chapter 5 discusses the metaphor works on the mental verbs From the angle of cognition .It includes two parts. One is synaesthetic metaphor from the sense organ words work as one of the morpheme in mental verb. The other is the metaphor works on "ai" ,it is given the habitual meaning. To the synaesthetic metaphor, we explain that the resemblance ,the developing regulation of human cognitive ability and the language"principle of simple"are the three factors in its'come into being. To the metaphor works on "ai",we contrast "ai1" with"ai2" in the areas of syntactical function and semantic feature. It proves further that metaphor play an important role in developing the acceptation.In this paper ,an all-dimensional expatiation is not given, but several new opinions are shown. Further studies will be needed to prove if they are objective and scientific .
