America Is in the Heart is the autobiographical novel written by Carlos Bulosan the well-known Filipino American writer, and it has been proclaimed a classic in Asian American literature. This thesis aims at an interpretation of the main line of the novel—a pilgrimage to Utopia—by applying postcolonial and cultural approach. The body of the thesis is made up of three chapters. Chapter one, titled quest for Utopia, aims at an exploration of the deep social roots of the protagonist Allos' initiation of pilgrimage to Utopia. Chapter two, titled disillusionment with Utopia, highlights the social and psychological factors for Allos' disillusionment with Utopia. Chapter three, reconstruction of Utopia, attempts to interpret the of Allos' strategies of the reconstruction of Utopia. The thesis points out that the pilgrimage to Utopia is a spiritual pilgrimage. The vision, put forward in the novel, of rebuilding a modern Utopia based on cosmopolitanism and universal fraternity, and of rebuilding a hybridized cultural identity reveal that the novel is both allegoric and prophetic. The more realistic significance of the spiritual pilgrimage to Utopia lies in the profound enlightenment brought by Allos' strong faith in Utopia to people especially modern men who are confronted with a severe faith crisis, that is "utopia is in the heart".
