| Many our vocational college students often feel frustrated in an attempt to remember English words. In addition, even though they are able to remember some words, they often use them incorrectly or inappropriately. Low efficiency of verbal learning and high frequency of vocabulary testing in various examinations, such as Practical English Test for Colleges, which are necessary to graduation, job-finding is a big headache for students, especially for vocational college students. Although this problem has been a big concern for both English teachers and scholars, few researches have been conducted in this area at home, especially on the use of strategies in learning vocabulary by vocational college students. Therefore it is worthwhile to probe into this problem. The research question of my thesis is: Why do vocational college students have trouble with vocabulary learning? It is hypothesized that these learning problems may mainly result from a lack of adequate and effective vocabulary learning strategies on the part of learners. The investigated and inquired subjects are 126 students from four classes who major in Preschool Education in Huhhot Vocational College and 100 valid questionnaires were taken as the original data, which were analyzed by using the software SPSS. The result of the survey shows that most vocational college students follow an unstructured approach and employ a narrow range of vocabulary learning strategies. There are also differences in using vocabulary learning strategies between good and poor learners.According to the situation in which vocational college students lack adequate vocabulary learning strategies and strategy instruction, the author has made analysis of the causes and come up with some suggestions in light of the result of the survey. Some vocabulary teaching and learning strategies are also suggested. In the end, the author points out the limitations of the study, and makes some tentative suggestions for further researches. |
