The Cohesive Relationship Between Shu Hui Drama Of The Yuan Dynasty And Shui Hu Zhuan

Shui Hu Zhuan (Outlaws of Marsh), a superstar in the history of Chinese literature, has long enjoyed a high reputation for its value of research. People carried on the research one generation after another. Before the work came into being, the Shu Hui Drama of the Yuan Dynasty prepared much for its birth. And it actually performed enormous influence on its conception. However, to many pedagogues in the 20th century, the connection between Yuan Opera and Shui Hu Zhuan lies only in that the literature succeeded the story in the opera, which is definitely a deficiency.Another deficiency rests with the disputes arising from the image of Song Jiang. The image of Song Jiang has always been a hot topic in the research. Ever Since last century, many debates have arisen from the studying of his image. And opinions differed greatly from each other. But consensus is achieved on one point, that is, Song Jiang is a core character of the work, and a good understanding of this character means a lot to the understanding of the whole work.Based on a good understanding of the"accumulating"characteristic of the Shui Hu story, the author intends to compare and summarize the two images of Song Jiang in the opera and in the literature in this paper. She then draw the differences and propose reasons, with a view of finding the origin of Shui Hu Zhuan and proving the contribution of Shui Hu opera to Shui Hu Zhuan. But in most cases, it will be approved that Shui Hu Zhuan is not equal to Shui Hu opera. Shui Hu Zhuan is a literary work which has a much higher artistic value than Shui Hu opera. The writer collected, treated and processed the folk tales and rude materials which are relatively low in level. Based on these, he created and promotes a folk production to a high-famed literature work. Those studies lead to a new perspective to understand the important status of Shui Hu Zhuan in literature history. And a new comprehension will be obtained form the aspect of the development of plots and characters.Guided by the above thoughts, method of comparison is adopted in this paper to seek rough formation principles of the novels of"accumulation from age to age"type from the same parts of the two versions based on the whole developing history of the story. While for the different parts of the two, analysis and comparison will be performed in order to better understand the characteristics of stories of different types. On the foundation of these studies, answers will be sought as to what causes those differences and what kind of factors are in performance. The development of Shui Hu Zhuan is itself a consecutive and intact process. And the many researches of Shui Hu Zhuan have derived enlightenment from the research of development of Shu Hu story instead of the pure text-to-text research. Considering problems of the work from the the grand perspective of development of the whole story may lead to new understandings and discoveries.What is innovative about this paper is that: first, based on the understanding of the characteristic of the work ----"accumulating"Shui Hu stories to a book, this paper carries out a historical review to the shaping of the character Song Jiang, so that a better understanding can be acquired as to the creative concept of the author of Shui Hu Zhuan. Second, clarify the relationship between Shui Hu opera and Shui Hu Zhuan. Because the existing and known story of Shu Hui Opera deviate from the what's in Shui Hu Zhuan in most cases, many scholars lack in their recognition of the important status of Shui Hu opera in the literature of Shui Hu Series, and its great contribution to the conception of Shui Hu Zhuan. Choosing the image of Song Jiang as a starting point, this paper seeks a new perspective --- the relationship between Shui Hu opera and Shui Hu Zhuan to study the work, hoping it will lead to a new direction for the study of Shui Hu opera of Yuan Dynasty. Third, analysis of the image of Song Jiang will be linked to the research of Shui Hu Zhuan, so that differences of the same character in different literary forms will be sought, and reasons for those will be proposed. And it is believed this is also an important reason for the differences between Shui Hu opera and Shui Hu Zhuan. Through the analysis and argumentation of the paper, it can be derived that the completion of Shui Hu Zhuan is a sublimation of folk story, a marriage of civilian culture and official thoughts. Shu Hu stories have undergone supplementation of people of several generations, so that their thoughts are really complicated. Every kind of thought can find reflection in it. Those stories are finally summarized and recreated by literature men, transforming into those Shu Hu stories that we all familiar with. Once realizing this point, you can better understand the relationship between Shui Hu opera of Yuan Dynasty and Shui Hu Zhuan.
