| Feminist translation theory is the offspring of the latest development in translation studies and modern feminist movement. It has questioned the shortcomings of traditional translation theories such as the supreme authority of the original text, fidelity as the highest standard for translation and the translator's invisibility. This thesis introduces the origin, the appearance of Western feminist translation theory and the rewriting in the name of feminism, analyzing the general influence of feminist translation theory on translation practice. After general introduction of Western feminist translation theory, the influence of Western feminist translation theory in China has been further discussed in this thesis. In the light of historical condition and the features of female translator in the history, we can say that the development of feminist translation theory takes a different way from the Western one because of different social and cultural backgrounds. In translation studies more and more Chinese scholars published the articles about the feminist translation theory while female translators made their translation with feminist consciousness which manifested in their choice of source text and words and their employment of feminist strategies, such as preface, footnoting, supplementing. Nevertheless, although these translations were bestowed with feminist consciousness, they showed different characters from their radical Western counterparts, still holding the fidelity as the utmost important principle. Besides, some misunderstandings arose during the dissemination of the Western feminist translation theory. In the last part, the thesis rectifies some common misunderstandings about the feminist translation theory.The comprehensive review of the Western feminism and its translation theory, especially its nationalization in China, are provided in this thesis in order to get the unique adoption of the theory which is suitable for China and could provide useful guidance for translation practice. |
