On The Translator's Subjectivity From The Perspective Of Feminism Translation

With the tremendous development of China's economy,it is urgent to improve China's cultural power.As one representative of culture,literary works play an important role in the cultural exchanges.In recent years,many foreign works have been translated by Chinese scholars,including Eileen Chang.Female awareness is not only the theme of her literary works but also reflected in her translations.With the special literary creation,Eileen Chang occupies an irreplaceable position in the history of modern Chinese literature.Her writings are studied by scholars from a variety of perspectives.However,her translator identity and translations fail to get enough attention as they deserve.In this thesis,on the basis of the feminism translation theory and from the perspective of feminism translation,the author of this thesis explores the translator's subjectivity in Eileen Chang's translation of The Old Man and the Sea with a focus on the clashes between Hemingway's male-dominant ideology and Eileen Chang's strong female awareness in literary creation.The purpose of this thesis is to call for more studies on Eileen Chang's translator identity and her translation features.The author adopts literature review method,case study method and comparative analysis method to analyze how Eileen Chang exerts her subjectivity in the process of translation.Through the study,the author of this thesis finds that Eileen Chang's subjectivity is manifested throughout the whole process of translation.Depending on the female awareness and writing style,Eileen Chang invades the original text with her own subjective consciousness.In the translation,she employs a plenty of expressions with femininity and deliberately obscures the masculinity so as to manifest her female translator identity.In addition,Eileen Chang adopts intervention strategies of the feminism translation theory.She not only writes the preface before the translation to embody her female translator identity,but also employs supplementing and hijacking to weaken the description on the male image and manifest the female awareness so as to make up for the omission of the female image in the original text and present a masculine image with both toughness and softness.
