As a bright pearl in the history of Chinese literature, Hongloumeng is known to all in China. From the beginning of 19th A. D., this novel being translated into foreign language for the first time, a new history began. Since then, Hongloumeng had walked out of China to the world. So far, the translations of this novel have reached to more than sixty, among which, Hawkes' proves itself to be one of the best. It is not only of exact language and beautiful words, and more important, it reflects creation in all respects.Among former theses on Hawkes' translations, there are not so many relating to the creation, where the most distinctive characteristic of this essay just lies in, expecting through comparing the translation with both the original and other translations, the creation can be reflected as much as possible. Therefore, the creation mentioned here in fact have two meanings: one is the re-creation of the translation based on the original; the other is the original creation of the translation compared with others. This essay is consisted of four parts. The introduction reviews the history of Hongloumeng' s translation into English, and also briefly introduces Hawkes and his translation.Chapter One discusses the re-creation of the translation based on the original. The first part solves the problem of the choice among different versions; the second part analyzes the re-creation from two aspects—revising the oversights of the original and eliminating the diversities existing between two cultures.Chapter Two discusses the original creation of the translation compared with others. The first part analyzes the original creation of style from volume separation pinyin explanation, introductions and appendixes; the second part analyzes the original creation of translation methods from the translation of the book title, characters' names and puns. The conclusion sums up the whole essay.
