Republic,as a philosophic classic, its content covers almost every field:politics, ethics, and esthetics, pedagogy and so on,it's the most important book written by Plato.Because Plato wrote this book as a dialogue, the later philosophers find hard to reach an agreement on it. But when they discuss political philosophy and social theory,Republic is indispensable,so they must make their own annotation.By contrasting Popper and Bloom's different annotations, this thesis attempts to find out the similarities and differences of liberalism and conservatism,I hope this may be helpful in the research on the development of liberalism and conservatism in the 20thcentury.The following is the basic frame of my thesis. The first chapter clarifies the different understanding of Popper and Bloom about Republic's compositional features. Then it tries to illustrate Bloom's idea that Republic is the true Apology of Socrates while Popper takes it for Plato's betrayal of Socrates. The second chapter focuses on the common concern of Popper and Bloom: preventing tyranny. And then it analyses the reasons that why they choose respectively the educational and the institutional way to prevent tyranny. The third chapter's key point is Bloom's critique on the historicism and relativism of democratic society. And based upon what is expatiated above,it tries to ask further this question:what kind life should we live?...
