| Color words form an important part of the Chinese vocabulary. This paper has done quite a systematic research on Chinese basic colors word. Generally speaking, the word (content words) has two kinds of meanings: one is linked with the concept of the core meaning: rational meaning which is playing a dominate role. The other one is attached to the rational meaning: color meaning. The author discovered in the research that Chinese color words is a kind of special word group. As affected by the ancient politics, traditional concept and religion thoughts, a part of some color word's extended righteousness then have certain political and mystery tendency.In China, some colors are regarded as"pure colors"and some are considered as"mixed colors"."Pure colors"and"mixed colors"in ancient times are always considered as confrontation between justice and injustice, respect and belcher, honest ness and evils, so some color word is rich in color meanings."Black","white","red","yellow","blue"and"green"are commonly used color words in Chinese culture. Their extended meanings are basically moving in the opposite directions in history. One kind is the expression of joy, appreciation, love and the other is the expression of repugnance, hate and derogatory. Even if the same color, its color meaning vary from time to time in the same culture. Either praise or criticism, the extended meanings extended in the opposite direction in its internal systems. This has reflected ancient's dialectical thinking mode and the historical development viewpoint which reversely have effect on the development of the Chinese color words. It contains culture implications of the two opposite direction. The article will explain its culture implications.This paper focus on Chinese color words ("red","yellow","green","black""white""purple","green"and"blue") mainly the basic color words("red""yellow","blue","black","white"). Through the research, the author will make an effort to seek its original meaning, clear off its extended meanings, analyze its cultural implications and their relationship.This article has studied the color word's origin and its development, as well as its cultural implications. |
