This thesis applies the theory of situation models to the translation of narratives. Situation models are integrated mental representations of a described state of affairs. Such mental representations are involved in language comprehension and memory retrieval. And the construction of a coherent situation model is tantamount to the successful comprehension of a text. By analyzing the four dimensions of situation models, the author attempts to compare the real or presumed comprehension of source-language message by source-language readers with the comprehension of target-language message by the average readers in the target language. If both the source-language readers and the target-language readers construct the same situation models, the translation would be a successful one. Thus translators must bridge the cultural differences and convey to the target-language readers the message received by source-language readers during text comprehension by reconstructing situation models in another language and culture setting.
