Han Shaogong is a special modern writer with talented writing, sophisticated thoughts and creative methods. His work has once made a sensation in the literary world. There is a series of classical figures in his work such as Look West in the Thatched Place, Father Father, the heavyweight piece of work of the "root-seeking" literature and Ma Qiao Dictionary, Implication, which is not clearly classified in style. Among those figures, physically or mentally disabled ones are particularly impressing. They have not only enriched the characters in Chinese modern literature but also contained the writer's sincere affection of concerning people from the bottom of the society and the value orientation of criticizing Chinese traditional culture. This essay tries to put the disabled figures in Han Shaogong's work in their historical background to examine them and compare them to a series of ones either in ancient times or foreign countries, thus mastering the writer's humanistic thoughts and desire of writing. Han Shaogong has miserable but crazy childhood, lonely and eager youthful days and now the old stage, wise and indifferent to fame and fortune. His rich experience, fine character and profound knowledge make him concerned about people from the bottom of society, dig for innate weakness and make best of his advantage in language skills to realize the value of himself and his work. The value is the analysis of human nature, the rebuilding of human personality, the criticizing of culture, humanistic concern, historical reflection and spirit building. The introduction makes a deep overall statement of research on Han Shaogong which is already done by others. It sketches the present achievement and limit of the research on Han Shaogong, showing the research sources and background of this essay. Meanwhile, it introduces the stream of thoughts, way of satire, method of researching and the original features.Chapter One focuses on the basic reasons why Han Shaogong chooses the disabled to be the target of portrait, especially his life and study experience. His writing ideas in disabled people are analyzed from three aspects: in reality, in history and in the world. The writing state of the writer's concerns about people from the bottom of society, with the moral of enlightenment. This idea and state is from the life experience of his own, thus from the abundant experience. It is from the knowledge of his own, thus from the depth of radiation and memory. It is from the abroad horizon of his own, thus from the influence of western knowledge.Chapter Two analyzes the motives of Han Shaogong's describing disabled people. The motives are stated in detail from three topics: culture, human nature and history, and they are to expose the innate weakness by digging for torture. Some are the criticizing of culture. Bing Zai in Father Father, for example, is to criticize the obstinate disease of tradition, i.e. the intense laziness and resistance to change. Some are analyzing of human nature. Lao Mu in Implication, for example, is so complicated that even the author himself writes questions. What kind of man on hell is he? Some are the suspecting of history. Take Returning for example, the bitter experience makes us suspect who is "self and who to go beyond "big self. The motive can also be the rebuilding of personality. For example, in Ma Qiao Pictionary, Fu Cha, Tie Xiang, Wan Yu, Ma Ming, ect. live freely, showing the strength and energy of the human lives in itself.Chapter Three focuses on the method of describing the disabled. Han Shaogong's unique way of portraying the disabled is conducted from writing features and skills. That is to fulfill the aesthetic way of writing by wise expression. Take Woman, Woman, Woman for example, is to narrate with metaphors. Three characters "woman" represent Aunt Yao, Aunt Zhen and Lao Hei and also spirits of three different value systems. Father Father, for example, is by describing folk customs. Bing Zai's Father Father and X Mother become two divinatory symbols called Ying Yang in fortune-telling if put in the describing of folkways with superstitious belief in ghosts and spirits. Ma Qiao Dictionary, for example, is by using of dialects. Only "not kind" and "mystical" in Chinese dialects can give us a lively character Tie Xiang.
