Introduction As one of the most important Chinese traditional arts, ink-wash painting conveys the spirit, charms, connotations, and the way of the world with the use of brushes, ink stands and ink. Through research on the artistic characters of Chinese ink-wash symbols, the author aims to explore the existence value of the symbols in modern ink-wash paintings, as well as enhancing artistic expressive force of modern ink-wash paintings.Method The article contains of four parts. The first part expatiates the beginning and development of Chinese in-wash symbols. The second part describes the traditional aesthetic philosophy theories contained by these symbols. The third part focus on the artistic characters of Chinese ink-wash symbols. And the fourth part further analyzes the reform of Chinese ink-wash symbols in 20th century so as to explore its development orientation and innovation in modern culture.Result Chinese ink-wash symbols contain abundant Chinese ethical theories such as Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. It regards the cultivation of Chinese aesthetic mode and culture. These provides important theoretic and referable values to solve the current problems in modern ink-wash paintings, to rebuild Chinese ink-wash paintings system with Chinese characteristics, as well as to cultivate Chinese traditional thinking mode and aesthetics.
