Since the mid 1980s, Zhang Yimou has acquired awards of the world continuously for his movies, and become one of the most Chinese successful directors of contemporary times. However, a lot of movie critics argue that Zhang Yimou is successful all over the world because he only learns from the western movie skills and only caters to western cultural appreciation. Moreover, a lot of audience dislike Zhang Yimou's movies, and they believe many details in his movie mismatch Chinese history background, which are against Chinese people's hope, smear the Chinese nation and even have lost the native special features of the Chinese movie. So analyzing the Chinese traditional esthetic ideas in his films which have gained highly prize of the world has become a very important problem.Zhang Yimou's film's success, is not only the result of being influenced by western movie art and western esthetics sense, but also based on his deep feeling and absorption of traditional race culture. Based on summarizing the former researches, this paper analyzes Chinese traditional esthetic features in Zhang Yimou's films. First, Zhang Yimou's film has Chinese traditional folk topic, contemporary Chinese ecosystem realistic topic and Chinese history legend topic, which reveal his concerns to Chinese traditional culture. Second, the imagery created by his lens and the artistic conception by montage all reflect the combination of emotion and scenery, flavor out of rhyme and the syncretism of nature and human, which are included in Chinese traditional esthetics.In conclusion, the reasons for Zhang Yimou's success lie in the Chinese traditional esthetic features and content revealed in his films. It is those esthetic features that have attracted so many audience, and hence are accepted by both east and western people and play an important role in the international movie field.
