Anne of Green Gables is a classic children's novel published in 1908 by the renowned Canadian writer Lucy Maud Montgomery.During the past years, many scholars have analyzed this book from different perspectives such as feminism, education, religion and so on, but according to my research, no one has given a systematic analysis of the romantic features of this novel which I believe can justify and explain its enduring popularity and universal appeal, thus this thesis aims at exploring the romantic features through a careful study of the classic children's novel Anne of Green Gables so as to bring a new perspective of reinterpretation and appreciation of this classic work in its 100th anniversary. The thesis will be divided into five sections.Introduction: A brief introduction of the author, the work Anne of Green Gables, its influences and related research status at home and abroad will be presented. The main body consists of four chapters.Chapter one: Romanticism in Literature. This chapter deals with romanticism in literature including its advent, major characteristics as well as its relevance with Anne of Green Gables.Chapter two: Embodiment of"Subjectivity"in Anne of Green Gables. This chapter will discuss the subjectivity from two respects. One is from the author's subjective emotions, personal experiences and creation of the work, the other is from the identity of Anne and her self-construction which can be portrayed by her personality growth, spiritual exploration and self-development through challenging social conventions to reveal the subjectivity of the author.Chapter three: Appreciation of Nature throughout Anne of Green Gables. This chapter will focus on the reflection of admiration of nature in Anne of Green Gables.Chapter four: Artistic Features in Anne of Green Gables. This chapter will probe into the artistic features in this piece of work including the full use of imagination as well as its poetic language which helps to fulfill the romantic objective of turning mundane things extraordinary. The conclusion part of this thesis is a brief summary of the main idea in terms of romantic features, namely subjectivity, appreciation of nature, imagination and poetic language in the novel Anne of Green Gables and its significance in the field of literary criticism.
