Who am I? What kind of person am I? People repeatedly ask themselves such questions in the process of exploring self-awareness, which started immediately after they were born. Forming a positive self-concept is a vital part in the objectives of child socialization. The development of self-concept is a turning point in child socialization and a necessary condition in personality formation. However, parents and teachers,"the important others"in children's daily life, attach little attention to young children's self-concept. This thesis is to call adults'attention to children's self-concept through researching the characteristics of self-concept of the top class children in kindergarten. In reviewing related literature on this subject from within china and abroad, the writer of this thesis found that when researchers and experts carried out their studies, they would employ a scale to measure the development of self-concept. But the fact is that children's inner world cannot simply be described through psychological measurement; picture drawing, instead, can be a good way of reflecting children's sub-consciousness. They can fully express themselves in drawing and through interpreting their drawings. This research is to combine drawing with scale in the case study and render a more explicit interpretation of the findings.Self-concept is the total of an individual's multiple conception of oneself, and self-evaluation of their abilities. It is found that the top class children in kindergarten have had the revert ability of"material self"and identity of gender, they can make objective self-evaluation of their body abilities independent of adults, whereas they tend to rely on adults'attitudes to make self-evaluation of social acceptance. There are also differences in sex, age and family background in this respect. The ultimate purpose of this research is to make teachers and parents realize that positive and unconditional attention from"the important others"is one important stimulus for children's positive self-concept. Teachers and parents should put aside their authority as much as possible in daily life, direct the children toward an objective self-evaluation and create a favorable interpersonal environment by making full use of the community resources so as to develop positive self-concept in young children.
