The Chinese basic vocabulary can date from the oracle inscriptions of the Shang Dynasty. This paper compares and rearranges meanings of the basic vocabulary in three dictionaries—The Oracle Inscriptions Dictionary, The Concise Oracle Inscriptions Dictionary and The Oracle Inscriptions Concise Dictionary, and systematizes and rectifies some meanings. Then this paper does some research on the characteristics of the basic vocabulary in the Oracle Inscriptions. At the same time, this paper briefly evaluates three dictionaries for their characteristics, their virtues and their defects. At last, this paper issues some author's opinions for improving and consummating the Oracle Inscriptions dictionary from semantic conclusion, methods of explaining meanings and index of words.
