The thesis sets in the phylogeny of the Western thoughts and reveals the modernistic prospect in Dostoevsky'novel world in depth---God has died, human beings make a choice between good and evil, freedom: the light which the life can't suffer. Dostoevsky is a prophet who was astubbing his toes on life's vicissitudes and destitute. When he faced the immense world night ,he had presaged the modernistic crises and seen the human in difficulty. He not only revealed the modernistic prospect in his own novel world to us, but also iconically portrayed two types of characters who are typical----the man in the basement and the man in influenced by Christ. They stand for two human spirits---the rationality and the faith. There are two sources in the phylogeny of the Western thoughts. They are the rationality from the ancient Greece and the faith from the Hebrew. On the one hand, .the two sources projected into human spirits. It reflects the rationality and the faith in the human spirits. On the other hand, the conflict and entanglement between the rationality and the faith in the human spirits also influence the development and trend of the rationality and the faith in the phylogeny of the Western thoughts. The thesis analyzes the man in the basement and the man in influenced by Christ in the in Dostoevsky'novel carefully. Three groups of characters as ensample illuminate the meaning of the man in the basement and the man in influenced by Christ. It displays the conflict and entanglement between the rationality and the faith in the human spirits. At the same time, whether the man in the basement or the man in influenced by Christ, they are both person who are reduplicative , unfinished and open. They can't escape from the conflict and entanglement between the rationality and the faith in human heart. The intrinsic root cause of the modernistic prospect and the modernistic crises in the novel world may come from the human dualism and openness. The author Dostoevsky who goes in for portraying characters who have dual personality sinks into the conflict and entanglement between the rationality and the faith in his heart. As a person, Dostoevsky has two faces----religious judge and Christian. On the one hand, he is a pious Christian. He has an desire to find the spirit home and come back to God's embrace. On the other hand, he is a thinker and philosopher who never let up. Although he abhors the shackle of rationality and the order of nature , he can't stop thinking the problem about the rationality and the faith through logical thinking. He desires being firm in faith to God through his unique theodicy , however, his theodicy can't solve all the antinomy in the face of endless disaster and uncompensated tears of inculpable children.
