| In the atmosphere of intercultural communication, western culture, like a strong wind, blows into our country and begins to influence every aspect of our traditional culture, revealing the threat of the gradual loss of traditional Chinese culture left behind by our ancestors. Confronting the increasingly lost traditional culture, more and more Chinese people begin to realize the severity of this phenomenon and set about to study the reasons as well as the solutions for the problem. At present, there are three different opinions toward this phenomenon. The first one is the opinion that over exaggerates the influence of western culture, resulting in pessimism to our traditional culture. The second opinion is too optimistic and confident toward our traditional culture which actually leads to the attitude of over optimism. While, the third one is the opinion that believes we should be rational and cautious when facing the inflow of western culture. What's more, the scholars who hold this opinion consider it a must to keep cultural diversity and give a sober consideration to the problem with a dialectic attitude. The author of this thesis shows a complete agreement with the third point of view. In order to gain a better mastery of the actual situation of traditional Chinese culture among English majors, and obtain the understanding of their attitudes toward our traditional culture, the author conducts an investigation and empirical study to the particular group in the form of questionnaires, based on the present situation of traditional Chinese culture and the adoption of Geert Hofstede's theory of cultural variations as well as Conrad William Watson's theory of multiculturalism. Resultantly, the author verifies the loss of traditional Chinese culture among English majors and points out the degree of the loss. Furthermore, through the detailed analysis of the sample questionnaires and combining with various influences toward traditional Chinese culture, the author sums up the concrete reasons accounting for its loss and puts forward practical suggestions to protect and develop our traditional culture, calling on every Chinese to rationally treat western culture, so as to protect the elite of our traditional culture and widespread it as possible as we can. This thesis consists of seven parts, including an introduction and six chapters. In the introduction, the author mainly presents the study background, aim, significance, methods, shining points and the structure of itself. The first chapter is the literature review, in which the author gives an overall review about the relative theories and previous studies both at home and abroad. The second chapter demonstrates her understanding toward our traditional Chinese culture, including the nature, characteristics and functions of our traditional culture. The third chapter makes an empirical study on the phenomenon by using Geert Hofstede's theory together with the questionnaire samples of the students, not only presenting the results of the investigation, but also giving the analysis and summary about the questionnaire. In Chapter four, the author presents a detailed analysis about the reasons for the loss of traditional Chinese culture among English majors based on the previous research questionnaire. In Chapter five, on the foundation of multiculturalism, the author suggests different ways to preserve and develop our own traditional culture. The last chapter draws an all-round conclusion, including to what extent our traditional culture is lost, the reasons for its loss, the effective ways to protect and develop our traditional culture. Furthermore, the author also points out the limitations of this research due to different causes. |
