Abstract/Summary:
With the development of international trade, international conventions on arbitration play a more and more important role in solving business dispute. As a legal text, it has the feature of high formality, precision and solemnity; meanwhile, as a special genre, it also has its own language features. The present study focuses on the lexicons in the original versions of international conventions on arbitration and tries to examine the lexical features of this genre.The study can be categorized into a branch of legal linguistics. Although this field has been well developed, there are still few works about legal lexicons and hardly any studies on the detailed and systematical analysis on lexicons in international conventions on arbitration. This study is essential for it helps to dispel misunderstandings between trading parties, and to reduce or avoid interpretation ambiguity.It firstly presents an overview of the current study, and then the theoretical framework, under which the research is conducted, is provided here. After a general analysis on the lexicons in the samples, three approaches of analyses: nominal, lexical cohesive devices and distinctive lexical features have been adopted in the study.Based on the previous study, the thesis draws a conclusion, discusses the significance and innovation, and presents some limitations in hope that it can provide references to people who may use the international conventions on arbitration on different occasions and for different purposes.
