Turfan documents Contain abundant first-hand materials about how local government and army dealt with all kinds of affairs in Tang Dynasty, therefore have been the precious mine for study of Tang Dynasty. Among these documents,"sicken soldiers"have been mentioned for several times."Sicken soldiers"had been a appellation in Tang dynasty, which included both sicken soldiers and injured soldiers.The Medical Statutes in the newly-discovered Tiansheng Statutes also covers many items about the dealing with sicken soldiers. Based on materials of the two fields mentioned above, this dissertation also integrates the historical recordation and tries to involve all materials about sicken soldiers that we have found so far.The main body of the dissertation contains three parts. The first part explains the background of relevant discussion, differentiating the instances of marching and station troops and then cones to the main points of discussion: the army and local government dealt with the problems of sicken soldiers together. The second part makes use of the relevant materials of Turfan documents and Tiansheng Statutes, and tries to reinstitute the whole process of dealing with sicken soldiers. The process include: discovering of sicken soldiers and reporting; verification and replacement of sicken soldiers. We pay attention to the archives circulating in departments of all levels, and try to point out every specifically branches that is responsible for. We also give a discussion about the medicine and medical personnel.The third part examines relationship of army and local government through the angle of sicken soldiers. The local government and army have a close relationship and cooperate well in the process of dealing with sicken soldiers. We can find these cases: not only the army left the sicken soldiers to the local government, but also the local government cooperated with the army actively in the ways such as providing the medicines, food supplies and paramedics and so on. The former instance included the sicken soldiers served in the Chefang车坊and other civil administration systems and the badly wounded stayed and seek for treatment in nearby prefectures and counties. The later included the local prefecture provided physicians and local government offer medicine and food supplies for the sicken soldiers as the Statutes prescribed.
