Charles Gounod, born in France in June 1818, was one of the country's best composers of the late nineteenth century. In his day, the opera-Faust, made him enjoy a tremendous popularity, and infused new vigor into lyric opera。The success of Faust did not lie in the direct quest for its philosophy moral, but the two facts as bellows. First, it revealed the human's emotion's world adequately by the description of conflicts between people, and even nowadays, the complex world of emotion is well worth for us to study。Moreover, the essence of the literature work is expressed in a more vivid way before audience, who must have enjoyed different inner experiences from reading.During the romantic period, people explored different themes of love and death, and Gounod tended to think about them philosophically. In detail, he paid more attention to the conflicts of people's ideal,pursuit,creation and desire ,which have been afflicting the society and have a real significance.In this article, we study the of spiritual meaning of the opera (Faust) in the light of cultural background, and try to present Gounod's art characteristics by music analyzing. There are three chapters here.In order to draw out his composition tendency, we first introduce the tendency of opera in the 19th century, and its relationship with romanticism.Then, with some exploration into the essence of Faust in chapter two, you will get the general description of the opera.For it's an opera essentially, we do a lot of work in music analyzing in the last part.(including its music language, its aria, its duet and its chorus).
