An Analysis Of Intercultural Pragmatic Failure In English News Interview

Jenny Thomas, English Linguist firstly puts forward the conception of "Pragmatic Failure". Thomas in 1983 believed Pragmatic Failure refers to "the inability to understand what is meant by what is said". In China, He Ziran firstly made the research on intercultural pragmatic failure. The research on intercultural pragmatic failure has an important significance for adding the linguistic knowledge, improving the pragmatic competence and intercultural communicative competence for language learners. People usually think it is enough for them just mastering the pattern and rules of a language, if they want to get an effective communication and accurate understanding, but which is not right. They are still required to know a rule that how to use a language, that is, pragmatic rules and social pragmatic convention. It makes language learners more aware of the importance of increasing the sensibility for the intercultural pragmatic differences to research deeply the essence and cause of pragmatic failure, so that which strengthen the press of advancing the pragmatic competence.This thesis analyzes the intercultural pragmatic failure all around from seven parts. On the basis of reviewing some literatures concerned with the foreign and domestic research on pragmatic failure, this thesis has made clear the definition of pragmatic failure, pointed out the existent problem on the research of intercultural pragmatic failure, adopted the way of comparative analysis to make the theoretic research on it from the point of view of culture, cognition, and context, and applied it to a new field, English news interview, aiming at using a large amount of news interview material to make an initial discussion on the problem occurring in intercultural communication between Chinese journalists and foreign interviewee, so as to realize the successful conversation in English news interview, and try the best to avoid the occurrence of the intercultural pragmatic failure in news interview. which takes the reference effect for the research of intercultural news interview.
