| From the 1960th, the research on English conversation discourse has been deepened by linguists around the world with the developed research method and techniques. As a special type of conversation, news interview is different from people's daily conversation on several aspects. Its special turn-taking organization not only founds the basic conversation pattern for the news interview, but also restricts and limits the speech acts of the conversation participants. Linguists abroad have implemented comparatively comprehensive and in-depth research on this issue. Recently, there also appeared series of news interview programs broadcasting in English in China. In this kind of news interview, the interviewer is usually a Chinese, while the interviewee/s are possibly of different nationalities, from different cultural backgrounds. There is rarely in-depth linguistic research on this newly appeared language phenomenon in China currently. The author of this thesis tried to supply this gap. With 15 pieces, totaling 450 minutes of English news interview, which the researcher recorded from CCTV English channel, as the basic data base, the research tried to answer the following two research questions by applying the research method of conversation analysis:(1) How does the turn-taking organization influence the aspects of the speechacts of the interviewer and interviewee/s in an English news interview in China? These aspects include interviewer's maintaining of neutrality, the production ofthe talk for the overhearing audience, the disagreements and its exit.(2) Does the factor of the different cultural backgrounds put any influence on theinterview? In another word, is there any difference in the interviewer's speech act performance when he/she faces interviewees from different cultural backgrounds? The research showed that the turn-taking organization in the news interview has founded the question-answer format between the interviewer and interviewee, and limited by this format, the interviewer has to throw out another question to continue the interview when the interviewee finished his answer to the last question. Without a chance to show his own assessment and viewpoint, the interviewer guarantees his/her neutralistic stance. The previous researches excluded the interviewer's production of acknowledgement marks, such as "mm hm", during the interviewee's talk. But this research found that when the interviewee, as an expert in the field, is producing an explanation to some technical questions, instead of some personal viewpoints, the interviewer could produce acknowledgement marks which will not influence his neutralistic stance. The research found that limited by the turn-taking organization, the interviewer can not produce any assessment to the interviewee/s' answer, which ensures not only his/her neutralistic stance, but also setting the audience as the final talk target. When there are several interviewees presented, the co-interviewees refer to each other in third person or his/her name, through which he/she sets the audience as the final talk target via talking to the interviewer. The research found that different from daily conversation, the disagreement between interviewees is direct and encouraged. The disagreement is usually ended by the interviewer, instead of the interviewees themselves. The disagreement could beproduced in accordance with, or via departure from the turn-taking provisions. Limited by the turn-taking organization, there is little influence of the factor of different cultural backgrounds on the performance of the interviewer. But the interviewer could adopt different footings when the interviewees are of different nationalities, while the interviewing topics are similar. The researcher accomplished certain experimental research on the English news interview in China. Applying the method of conversation analysis, the researcher performed relatively in-depth and creative study on the turn-taking organization of the English news interview in China. The conclusions made are of cer... |
