The later period of the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), as the originator of opera Mulian opera is expanding developed from the north to south of the china. Through the four feudal-dynasty of Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing, Mulian opera now is being a particular and ancient opera with the most popular in spread, plentiful in artistic style, magnificent in composition, widespread in content. It involves traditional (Chinese) operas, common systematic tunes, religion (music), historical background, folk custom etc, and hence the Puxian Mulian opera now is called "walking fossil" and it also compound with three ideology of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism.Up to now few scholars have studied the origin between Puxian Mulian and Taoism although it originated in Buddhism. This thesis applies the comparative methods of case study in the origin and relation between Puxian Mulian opera and Taoism from historic, philosophy, religion, folk customs and culture, attempts to offer deeper and comprehensive study.This article includes introduction, 4 chapters of contents and conclusion. The introduction gives an account of basis, motive, purpose, process and restrict of study, the 4 main parts mainly research the origin and relation between Puxian Mulian opera and Taoism from the god of the opera, show custom, text style, music melody and rhythm. Furthermore, the conclusion of the thesis aims to make a thorough inquiry into the deeper roots of the two from philosophy, religion, social, ideological and historical.
