Chinese traditional culture is a great treasure house with a remote historical origin. In this depository, the Art of War, which is a Chinese military treatise written during the 6th century BC by Sun Tzu, is a special and dazzling pearl. This thesis takes Skopostheorie as the theoretical foundation. The author raises a concept of"dynamic balance"and builds its model on the basis of"dynamic equivalence"and"functional appropriateness"illustrating that the ultimate objective of translation is to keep"balance", including the balance of author, translators and readers, the balance of source text and target text, the balance of text and extra-text. This"balance"is guided by the purposes of readers and translators and influenced by translational situation. The"balance criteria"is variable because of these variable influential factors. This thesis makes a comparative study of the three most influential and representative English versions of Sun Tzu's The Art of War and tries to make"dynamic balance"into practice and studies the"dynamic balance"in the three versions. The three versions of Sun Tzu's The Art of War reach the"dynamic balance"criteria and they are successful ones at its own time. Because the"balance"is dynamic, re-translation is necessary. There is no perfect"ultimate version".This thesis focuses on the balance of author, translators and readers, the balance of source text and target text, the balance of text and extra-text, then concludes the theory and model of"dynamic balance"on the basis of analyzing the success of three versions of The Art of War.Because it is the first time that the author raises a concept of"dynamic balance"and builds its model. This thesis just puts it into practice from The Art of War, whether it is useful and practical for other literary works still needs proving.
