This paper regards Liang Qichao's ethic thought of Doctrine of New People as the research object, excavating its rich thought of ethics and discovering its great contemporary significance for contemporary Chinese socialism moral construction. In this paper, the author thinks that patriotism is a piece of red thread in Doctrine of New People, that the spirit of patriotism is Liang Qichao's conviction forever and his highest ethic principle he persuaded, which permeates through every couple of moral relation and every moral character. Under the direction of the patriotism principle, in order to construct the "New People" ideal character, Liang Qichao strongly criticized Chinese traditional ethic thought, contrasting it with modern western ethic value. He advocated reshaping "New Moral", that is to say, the "New People" should cultivate common morality, such as "benefiting public" and "benefiting country", and the "New People" should foster modern ethic idea, such as "freedom" and "right". At the same time, Liang Qichao pointed out that Chinese "private morality" had greatly retrograded and degenerated in modern China, so the task to promote people's "private morality" was very urgent. So there was need to deal with the relation between the "common morality" and the "private morality", constructing the "New People" with the thought combining the public moral with the private. This paper also describes Liang Qichao's Life and Death Idea. The author holds that Liang Qichao demanded the "New People" should have that thought of "dealing seriously with life and death". The author thinks Liang Qichao's "Life and Death Idea" is permeated with the patriotism principle. At the end, this paper investigates important effect of Liang Qichao's ethic thought to Chinese thought development. The author hopes the paper can excavate valuable resources for Chinese socialism moral construction, expounds and propagates its rational contemporary significance.
