Ideology And News Translation

With the acceleration of globalization, connections between countries are further tightened and speed of information transmission is also enhanced. News, as the major medium for information transmission, plays an important role in modern society. News occupies the foreland of the society and represents the orientation of language development. At the same time, news translation has become an important link of information and cultural exchanges between countries.Studies on news translation have lasted for a long period of time, and great achievements have already been made in this field. But most scholars have based their studies on the linguistic level of news translation rather than digging into the deeper cultural layer. The author observes the various aspects of news translation studies. News translation is not merely a shift between two languages, but rather is under the control of a sophisticated web in which various factors of ideological manipulation are involved. Among these factors, ideology is the most influential force. To some extent, manipulative factors that are prominent in news translation are more or less affected by the collective ideology of the society.Based on an analysis of ideological manipulation in news translation, this thesis aims at highlighting the role and position of ideology in translation process and its guiding significance to news translation. The thesis starts with the current situation of news translation studies and the achievements of previous studies; then it elaborates on news and news translation, pointing out features and constraints of news translation; this is followed by a detailed account of the "culture turn" and Lefevere's systems theory, which provides effective theoretical support to the author's study. The core of this thesis is an analysis of various ideological factors that manipulate news translation. Illustrated by typical examples of ideological manipulation, the author classifies and systemizes different factors that lead to ideological manipulation in news translation.
