In Sui and Tang Dynasty (581-907), China was reunited after 300 years long split and entered a united and prosperous period. Its territory at that time reached Japanese Sea in the Northeast, Caspian Sea in Northwest, Lake Baikal and upstream of Yenisei river in the north, and Rinan in the south. After Emperor Yang took his throne, he made Dongjing City and a canal with the economic background. The delicacy and luxury fulfilled the emperor' s lust, and the 4800 li long canal improved the economic and cultural communications of the country. The social system was developed and perfected by Emperor Yang, which was a necessary transitional period for Tang Dynasty. In Tang Dynasty, the social stableness and open politics were emphasized. "Zhenguan Reign" was a prosperous and harmonious period, and "Kaiyuan Era" with Li Longji as the emperor reached the peak. Tang Dynasty became the most prosperous period in China' s feudal society.Prosperous economy made solid foundation for development of arts. In Tang Dynasty, arts reached the peak. Poetry, calligraphy, painting, sculpture, music, dance and novel were fully developed, which made a miracle in world art history. One Soviet esthetician believes: art is the reflection and representative of the culture, in this respect, art has the function of self-awareness; because "art is like a mirror, culture sees itself in culture and knows itself. He also points out that the history of art may reflect historic development of culture accurately and vividly. In some sense, art of a nationality or era is framed in the culture of the nationality or era. The glory of arts in Sui and Tang Dynasty was put forward by politics, economy, philosophy, culture and so on. But the spirit of innovation is the ultimate reason for art development.
