In modern Chinese, words are endowed with various functions. Nouns or noun phrases can not only function as the Subject and the Object, but also as the Predicate. Sentences in which nouns or nouns phrases are the Predicate have been defined as Nominal Predicate. Nominal Predicate, as an important component in the system of sentence patterns in modern Chinese, is frequently used. Even if it only accounts for a small proportion, Nominal Predicate presents the characteristics of the Chinese Language in nature. Based on the existing studies, the present research is conducted with an overall and systematic investigation into Nominal Predicate from the perspectives of Syntax, Semantics and Pragmatics. The thesis firstly introduces the proposal of Nominal Predicate, reviews the research backgrounds and analyzes the existing studies. How the definition of Nominal Predicate in its types has been clearly defined and the research object is also clarified by solving the questions posed in the present study.Based on the previous studies, the thesis makes an analysis of Nominal Predicate from the perspective of Syntax, Semantics and Pragmatics by defining, categorizing, exemplifying, and contrasting. On the layers of Syntax and Semantics, the present study covers almost all the types that can function as the Subject and the Predicate in Nominal Predicate. Meanwhile, the semantic relations that can probably exist between the Subject and the Predicate are analyzed as well. In addition, the Pragmatic analysis of Nominal Predicate has been conducted in some existing researches. While due to their lack of systematic framework and insufficient data support, they have not fully presented the Pragmatic connotations of Nominal Predicate. This thesis makes a contrastive study of Nominal Predicate and Verb Predicate in the scope of Pragmatics and delves into usage of Nominal Predicate to reveal its unique pragmatic functions besides its applications in Syntax and Semantics, which is also the creativity of the present research.
