Introspection On The Scholars' Social Responsibility In Ru Lin Wai Shi

History is constructed, not destroyed. The social civilization, no matter the material civilization or the spiritual one, will depend on construction. Although there was decayed and downfallen side in the feudal society, it created the brilliant aspects in the Chinese ancient civilization. In literature criticism, we should not blindly affirm the behavior of disoperation with the ruling class. Instead, we should cast our admiring eyes on those who contributed to the society, the country and the people. As far as Ru Lin Wai Shi was concerned, the past investigations gave extortionate appraisal to the dreamboat, for example, Du Shaoqing. From the responsibility they should shoulder, the present thesis will renewedly survey the status of Ru Lin Wai Shi.Du Shaoqing in Ru Lin Wai Shi had the prototype in social life. Starting with the analysis of the difference between the character in the novel and the prototype, the present thesis observes the criteria of the writer's choice in the characters' accepting or rejecting, explores the varieties of reasons for the model of these characters, and analyzes it from three perspectives: social circumstance, the writer self and the surrounding of the writer.With the above three reasons, the writer shaped the dreamboat like Du Shaoqing. Shall we blindly admire them like the writer? Of course not. Proceeding with the scholars, the thesis analyzes the Confucianists' requirements to them. From ascending the stage of the history, the scholars should shoulder the responsibility of the country and be the nucleus and the back of the country. They should have the positive attitude towards life and contribute themselves to the social and historical development. Enumerating varieties of positive scholars in the history, combining the political and cultural prosperity in Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong's times, applying to those like Du Shaoqing, the thesis points out that they were self-seeking and lacked the responsibility to the country. Therefore, it concludes that they should not get the great appraisal and the novel Ru Lin Wai Shi should be objectively judged.
