A Study On The Phonology Of Xinglongchang Dialect In Luxi County, Hunan Province

Xinan mandarins and Xiang dialects occupy very important position in Chinese dialects. The location of Xinglongchang Town in Luxi County, Hunan Province is very special, because it's on the zone of transition of Xinan mandarins and Xiang dialects.Based on the existed research, this paper gives a study on the phonology of Xinglongchang dilact from the points of diachronic and synchronic. It views the main phonetic features and the general evolvement of Xinglongchang dialect, and makes certain which dialect group it belongings to.The first chapter shows briefly us the geography, the history, the population, the nations of Luxi County and Xinglongchang Town, and the languages and dialects used there. It also introduces the present studies on the dialects in Luxi county and Xinglongchang town.The second chapter describes the phonology of Xinglongchang dialect, including initials, finals and tones.The third Chapter gives a syllabary of homophones of Xinglongchang dialect.The forth chapter compares the phonology of Xinglongchang dialect with the phonology of Chinese in the Middle Age in initials, finals, tones, and entirely analyzes the characteristics of Xinglongchang dialect.The fifth chapter analyses the differences pronunciational variants in literary reading and colloquial speaking of Xinglongchang dialect.The sixth chapter compares the phonology of Xinglongchang dialect with Shuangfeng dialect and Qiyang dialect as the presentations of Xiang dialect, and Changde dialect and Shimen dialect as the presentations of Xinan mandarin. It nails down that Xinglongchang dialect belongs to Xiang dialect but it has rich characters of Xinan mandarin.
