Cannibalism, featured as a main topic of Luxun's works, was developed in a rather long period during which Luxun understood gradually the cannibalistic phenomenon in Chinese society and made it a central topic of the national critique of the common people in his literature. The narration of cannibalistic phenomenon was mostly used to castigate those ignorant and unenlightened people, who, in the situation of the cannibalism of society, not only ruined and stifled some extraordinary individuals, but also entertained themselves with others' torture and disaster, even became the accessories. Luxun, a lonely spirit warrior, disliked and hated such people; he also scorned at them and even felt horrified. So he finally wanted to take revenge on them. However, he was fully aware of the historical and cultural background bringing about those people through the representation of cannibalism of those ignorant and unenlightened people. Being influenced by the ideological trend of his epoch, Luxun's comprehension had its limitation, but his observation and experience of China's dark history and culture led to his advanced thought. Because of no person sharing his thought, he felt deeply depressed. However, Luxun still struggled, which contributed to the deepest and most painful spirit purgatory. Cannibalism transcends classes and ideology and is the underside of humanity. So he felt ambivalent to the common people. He not only hoped to remold those ignorant people, but put great expectation on the next generations. He got his teeth into that, expecting better reform of the cannibalistic society.
